Beautiful Asheville, NC

Welcome to our first feature blog here at Katahdin Cedar Log Homes of the South.  Each month we will be focusing on a new city, town, village, outpost or just about any place located in the Appalachian Mountains of the southern United States that is charming, breathtaking and loaded with amazing things to do.  This month, we take you to the gorgeous landscapes of Asheville, North Carolina.

Located in Buncombe County, Asheville is the largest city in Western North Carolina.  And while the city is a bustling nerve center for the region, it is the natural wonder of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains that captures our imagination.  The hills stretch from the center of town and rise swiftly from the foothills to the peaks of the Blue Ridge, overlooking the Swannanoa River and the twisting French Broad River.  The mountains provide elaborate hiking trails for every experience level and accommodates all types of outdoor lovers.  Other ways to enjoy the scenic landscapes of the area are whitewater rafting, guided paddle tours, zip lining and balloon rides, among others.  Asheville is home to the historic Biltmore Estate, which offers year round vacation packages, golfing, wine tasting and some of the most amazing views of the natural beauty of the region.

Asheville has a unique history that spans centuries.  Prior to European settlement, the region was part of the expansive Cherokee Nation.  The history of Asheville, as a town, begins in 1784 when Colonel Samuel Davidson settled with his family along the Swannanoa River.  His family remained in the area for several years, eventually settling at Bee Tree Creek following Samuel's death at the hands of local Cherokees.  At the onset of the Civil War in 1861, the population of Asheville was approximately 2,500.  The town was mostly untouched by the war, until the Battle of Asheville broke out in 1865.  For the most part, the battle was an afterthought.  Union soldiers retreated into Tennessee after being driven out of town by a small group of local Confederates at the present-day site of the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

With such deep history, breathtaking scenery and so much to do, Asheville is among the greatest tourist destinations of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  This amazing city is host to festivals and events such as the 4th of July Fireworks Show, The French Broad Fall Fest, art gallery showings and the Hardlox Festival, just to name a few.  So pack your bags and come see all Asheville has to offer.  It's charm, culture, beautiful weather and local pride make it one of the South's best little attractions.  And once you've fallen in love, contact Katahdin Cedar Log Homes to discuss ways that you can call Asheville "home".
